Project Gables
A 1950s dormer home in Hedge End, extended and fully renovated by Hinton House. Thoughtful layout, pet-friendly design and seamless design and build.

Project status: build complete, interiors in progress, completion 2027.
When our clients bought their 1950s dormer home in Hedge End four years ago, they knew it had potential. Unlocking it, though, proved harder than expected. Gables is the story of a complete transformation: a full rip-out, two extensions and a layout finally shaped around the way they live.
The Brief
Our clients, a couple and their much-loved dog, had spoken to several architects over the years without ever settling on a layout that felt right. Each plan solved one problem but created another, and the project stalled. What they needed was clarity. Function matters enormously to them, and they wanted a home where every room had a purpose and every detail had been properly thought through, not just a beautiful one.
The Design Approach
We began by stepping back from the drawings and focusing on how they actually live day to day. By simplifying the layout and really understanding their routines, we arrived at a plan that felt calm, logical and entirely theirs. The renovation covers the whole home: a new kitchen, dining and lounge, a utility room, a downstairs WC, a family bathroom and three bedrooms. Throughout, the design is led by function. A practical utility space opens straight onto the garden, making muddy walks and everyday comings and goings effortless. We chose pet-friendly flooring that looks beautiful and wears well, and well-considered storage throughout means everything has a home, so the spaces stay calm and uncluttered.
The Build
Project Gables had two challenges at its heart. Our clients had previously been told that neither extending the dormer nor adding a side extension would be possible. Because Hinton House Interiors and Hinton House Construction work together from day one, design and buildability are considered side by side. That allowed us to find a way to deliver both, creating valuable extra space upstairs and down. The build is now complete, and the home has been extended and fully stripped back, ready for its new chapter.
